Equifax Cybersecurity Incident

 

What Happened?

On September 7, 2017, Equifax reported a cybersecurity incident potentially impacting 143 million U.S. consumers. Based on the company’s investigation, the data breach occurred from mid-May through July 2017, and includes:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Birth dates
  • Addresses
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Credit card numbers
  • Certain dispute documents with personal identifying information

Equifax has set up a dedicated website which includes the consumer notice, FAQs, and other vital information surrounding the cybersecurity incident at www.EquifaxSecurity2017.com.

Steps You Can Take:

  • Determine if you were impacted by the data beach by visiting www.EquifaxSecurity2017.com.
  • Consider placing a credit freeze with credit bureaus to make it harder for someone to open a new account. View the Federal Trade Commission's website for more information regarding credit freezes. 
  • Closely monitor credit card and financial accounts for suspicious activity. Be sure to notify McGraw-Hill FCU or the other financial institution as soon as you suspect unauthorized activity.
  • Schedule a Financial Wellness Check-Up with a skilled advisor who can help you review your credit report and check for inaccuracies.
